Census in Pakistan
The sixth census is in progress all over the country and the load is on the teachers. It seems to be an almost impossible task because:
- The training was very short and incomplete.
- The areas given are very large.
- The directions are old.
- The maps are not clear.
- The time is short.
- The workload is double because of election commission lists.
- The public is not cooperative.
- The government has not propagated this census properly (especially in electronic media. If govt. has advertised in on govt. channels I don’t know because no one sees these channels.)
- The weather is also not helpful.
The government should extend the deadline from 19th of April to at least 19th of May.
If the government thinks that the enumerators can get the data from more than 1500 homes in fifteen days, when we have to tell the story of the census and their benefits to almost everyone, they must have thought of us as ghosts.
From 8 am to 4 pm daily how many people can stand, talk and write. Many of the enumerators who started their work with high jingoistic spirit now want to quit because they now realized that they cannot complete the task.
People of urban areas think that it is govt. policy to find how many people are living in one house and then they will impose a tax on them. Therefore they are reluctant to give data. Also, the data collected is doubtful because people don’t want to waste time in giving details. They try to see the enumerator off as quickly as possible.
The data collected in these situations will be also doubtful because everyone is in hurry. Another important issue is that the enumerators are not 100% interested in census anymore because of payments issues i.e:, the govt. has not paid any money for the training which is with the DCO’s from some months now and the enumerators are thinking that the will not get any money for this process.
In the end, I want to appeal to the govt. of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that they should ask the federal govt. to extend the deadline as did the Sindh govt.
